In an age of information growth beyond calculation, we, as Christ’s disciples, must be more and more reliant upon His mind, rather than our own. However, He is the one who transforms human thinking into kingdom thinking, and temporal knowledge into eternal wisdom.We are indeed created in the image of our Maker, and he has implanted in us curiosity, intelligence, discernment, creativity, and in synchronization with His Holy Spirit, the ability to see life through His eyes as we view all the events and developments throughout the world.Seeing God’s sovereign control and circumstantial engagement is something we cannot and should not miss.Every thought, idea, discovery, development, and implementation is a direct result of knowledge God has always possessed. Humankind may indeed see and create new things as compared to history, but “there is nothing new under the sun” to God.It is that perspective on all of life that Dr. Burrell believed in and implemented moment by moment and day by day as he grew in His intimate oneness with God through prayer and time in God’s Word.This is why I believe this compilation of sermons by Dr. Burrell to be so very relevant to us today. He should challenge us, as someone who depended almost exclusively upon written and oral information, whereas we have an exponentially increasing amount of information at our fingertips being carried in our pockets every single day because of technology.The danger is that we get so flooded with the preponderous of minutia, the manipulation of information, the self-serving craving for acceptance and affirmation, the overwhelming amount of known tragedies and catastrophes, and the ceaseless barrage of noise all around us, that we do not hear God, see God, think of God, or even desire God because we are so stressed and crushed by the fear, the despair, and the brazen evil arising everywhere we look.But we have the mind of Christ.Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NIV)It is this hope, this optimism, this eternal view, this “mind of Christ” that was the filter through which ALL of life was interpreted by Dr. Burrell. And that should be the truth for us as well.
